小职员建生（梁家辉 饰）沉迷赌博，以求一朝发财，不料却欠下一身赌债。妻子美凤（林青霞 饰）为了帮丈夫还债，不惜亏空公款。建生为了填补公款缺口，一起和美凤前往泰国亲戚家借款。返回途中美凤失足坠海，建生突起歹心，见死不救，最终警方判定美凤畏罪自杀。建生开始了新的生活，处心积虑获得了公司董事长的青睐以及他的女儿的芳心，事业开始飞黄腾达。
