《禁地》三个英国士兵在醒来后发现自己困在无人区，而更为麻烦的是无人区为德国管辖地界，故事由此展开。。唐朝末期，镇海军将领钱镠带领将士在江边剿灭江贼，一行人潜入江贼洞内发现双头异兽魑龙，一头口吐雷击，另一头赤角刀枪不入，千钧一发之际两名术士赶到使用支离术救下钱镠击退魑龙，被击退后的魑龙游到钱塘江开始攻击钱塘郡，钱塘郡生灵涂炭...。Morse finds himself the subject of a murder investigation when his friend, Beryl Newsome, is murdered at a rehearsal of the Magic Flute and he foolishly touches the murder weapon. Morse is suspended and DCI Bottomley, with DS Lewis assisting him, is put in charge of the case.
