Speedy" loses his job as a soda-jerk, then spends the day with his girl at Coney Island. He then becomes a cab driver and delivers Babe Ruth to Yankee Stadium, where he stays to see the game. When the railroad tries to run the last horse-drawn trolley (operated by his girl's grandfather) out of business, "Speedy" organizes the neighborhood oldtimers to thwart their scheme.。该剧主要分为三个单元，整个剧情不仅有着案件悬疑的精彩剧情，同时也有很多让人觉得温情感人的部分，罗三拐和罗妻，两人都是非常善良并且极具同情心的人物，两人养育的四个孩子中，有两个孩子并非是自己亲身的，令原本就不富裕的两人负担变的更重，但是两人都没有放弃，罗三拐为此也更加努力，并且将自己也改造成为新中国合格的人民警察。。
