故事发生在20世纪70年代初的某个夏日，供职于江陵市医化所某科研人员意外死亡。得到报案后公安人员迅速出动，通过对现场的勘查很快判定，死者因与另一位助理陈小小发生过争吵，随后服毒自杀。虽然被判定为自杀，但是陈某却以“逼人致死”的罪名锒铛入狱，面临漫长的刑期。时间过了将近十年，当年参与办案的侦查员李安已成长为公安战线的精英，她的未婚夫路沙是一名科研工作者，而且与陈小小曾有过一段恋情。李安发现未婚夫对旧爱还有留恋一度心情烦躁，不过二人敞开心扉交流后，她发现当年的案件中存在许多疑点。
