故事发生在大分裂时期的南北朝刘宋王朝，史称前废帝的刘子业（张逸杰 饰）即位，他年纪轻轻却残忍凶暴，阴毒无情，嗜血如命，他滥杀无辜，淫乱后宫，将刘宋的江山带向危亡。在他短暂的生命中，他与同母姐姐山阴公主刘楚玉（关晓彤 饰）的不伦关系尤其令人不齿。天地昏暗，民不聊生。江湖第一帮派天机楼不满刘子业的暴政，派出朱雀（关晓彤 饰）进入公主府，期间她与公主的面首容止（宋威龙 饰）相识，并为其所吸引。在各方势力运作下，刘子业终结了他匆匆而罪恶的一生。而就在此时，朱雀又发现了容止的真实身份。
